Summer Emergencies

dr_in_classroom.jpgAs summer approaches, it is inevitable that you will see children out and about enjoying the warm weather. Their genuine laughter can warm our hearts in an instant. However that can quickly turn to gut wrenching tears if they fall and injure themselves. Most parents and grandparents know what to do if a child scrapes their knee but can be in the dark about injuries to the mouth or teeth. The mouth tends to bleed and swell quickly making the situation seem even worse than it really is. One of the most important things you can do as a parent or caregiver to protect that precious smile is to make sure that you are prepared before an accident even occurs.

The first thing the parent needs to do is to stay calm and not panic in front of the child. Evaluate the situation – Has the tooth been knocked out completely...or has the tooth been chipped.

Time is the enemy when a tooth has been knocked out. If a dentist is seen within one hour after an accident, chances are good that the tooth can be re-implanted and saved. Rinse the tooth off and place it in a cup of saliva or milk. Do not let it get dry and do not touch the root portion of the tooth.

With chipped teeth the situation is slightly more complicated. If your child is experiencing pain or sensitivity in the affected tooth, see a dentist immediately as this indicates the tooth nerve may be injured. The dentist can perform a root canal or other necessary procedure to save the tooth. A porcelain crown or tooth colored filling material can be placed on the tooth to restore your natural smile.

If your child is not experiencing pain or sensitivity, contact your dentist to see whether or not your child should be seen. In most cases, this will not require immediate attention and your dentist will schedule your child for an appointment.

Remember prevention is one of the best ways to avoid these uncomfortable situations. The best way to prevent a dental emergency is to properly protect your child. Increasingly, dentists are recommending that children engaged in sports wear mouth guards. Once only used in football and ice hockey, mouth guards are now being recommended for other sports as well including rollerblading, basketball and soccer.

Not only do mouth guards protect teeth, they also protect lips, gums and cheeks. There are two types of mouth guards, Boil-and-Bite available at sporting goods stores and Custom Fitted Mouth Guards available from your dentist.

Your child’s dental care is not only responding to emergencies!

Your child's first visit to the dentist should be between the time the first tooth appears (5-8 months old) and the time when all the primary teeth are visible (before 2 1/2 years old). Take your child to a dentist every 6 months and let the dentist know if your child thumb sucks or breathes through the mouth.

Children who are accustomed to having their gums wiped and teeth brushed every day will be more comfortable going to the dentist so follow a few basic rules:

  • The child's teeth and gums should be brushed at least twice each day and especially before bed.
  • When your child gets permanent teeth, he or she should begin flossing each evening before bed.
  • When the child reaches the teens, braces or extractions may be needed to prevent long-term problems.

So enjoy your summer and its activities, and make a visit to your dentist with your children a part of it!
